I spent a good chunk of the last few days submitting this blog to directories. And I'll tell you, I am damn sick of typing the same information over and over and over and over and over ... (Has anyone else ever noticed that if you type or write the same word multiple times it stops looking like a real word?)
Being new to the directory game, I haven't developed an opinion yet. Most seem like a directory, nothing more: a list of blogs. A few are different, though, and strive to be more like a online community or social network.
One really stands out: SlogBite^. Although the site itself is a bit rough around the edges, that is to be expected with any new venture. It is the owner, Mel, who makes it shine: personal attention and a clear dedication to this project. It is still in pre-launch officially, but I feel confident in recommending it to other bloggers interested in increasing exposure through a directory.
My collection of mini-badges reside in the right sidebar, but I'm throwing them in here too for good measure.

When submitting to blog directories, keep a "Blog Directory Data" file so you can just "copy and paste" the relevant data when submitting.
You should combine the backlinks from blog directories with the backlinks from the articles you submit (on topics closely related to your blog's most important keywords).
A properly developed backlink program will deliver far more targeted traffic to your blog due to its impact on the search engines than due to the actual directory links themselves.

Since I update this list weekly there are now 383 entries listed with NO DEAD LINKS.
Try to submit to 3-5 directories PER DAY. This discipline will pay big dividends over the long run.

I used to have a bunch of those links in my sidebar, but my Google rank dropped from 3 to 0 and remains there. I took them off about a week ago, maybe. Can't remember if it was before or after I lost my internet. In any case, evidently Google frowns on massive use of link exchanges and detracts from your score if you link out to sites they don't like. Or something. Not that a rebel like you will care. ;)
